Cattle Feed

How Much DDGS Can be Fed to Dairy Cows ?

  • Max. of 20% of ration DM or 2-7 kg/day per animal
  • Usually no palatability problem at 30% of DM May feed excess protein
  • At more than 30% of DM may show impact on butterfat and protein in milk
  • Calves Up to 20% DMI
  • Replacement Heifers Up to 25% DMI

Lactating dairy cow diets must be composition of balanced diet which may contain 20% or more DDGS on a dry matter basis as long as diets are nutritionally balanced. Feeding DDGS diets containing up to 30% DDGS provide similar or increased milk production compared with when cows are fed traditional feeds. The fiber in DDGS, is usually considered to be a replacement for high- starch feed ingredient such Rice / corn. DDGS is a good source of protein, fat, phosphorus, and energy for lactating dairy Cows. Preferably DDGS can be include upto 20% in cow diets for better response. Distiller’s grains can replace more expensive sources of protein , energy, and minerals in dairy cow diets. It has been found,

situations feeding rations containing DDGS results in milk production as high, or higher , than when dairy cows are fed rations containing soya bean meal as the protein source. DDGS is very good energy source for dairy cattle. It contains high amounts of NDF but low amounts of lignin. This makes DDGS a highly digestible fiber source for cattle , and reduces digestive upsets compared to when corn is fed. The highly digestible fiber in corn / Rice DDGS also allows it to serve as a partial replacement for forages and
